tuftsmania on failed viral marketing attempts

While my friend Andrew is blogging about Judd Apatow’s newest viral marketing scheme, which is quite successful to an extent, I’m going to blog about a recent viral e-mail marketing attempt…

Which in my opinion, failed miserably.

This is how it starts out:

Initially I’m thinking, sweet, a new leak. Then I proceed to click the link to listen. Whatever smile I had on my face was reduced to a neutral stare. “this can in no fucking way be Justice” is what tell myself. So I put that message aside for a few days.

This morning I woke up to my blackberry blinking red. I got another email from the same person who ‘forwarded’ me that message from sarah colette (more on that later).

The truth comes out. Someone came up with the bright idea…

“HEY, LET’S BUILD SOME HYPE FOR YOU BY TRYING TO PASS OURSELVES OFF AS JUSTICE….AND THEN TELL EVERYONE THE TRUTH AFTER THEY ARE TOTALLY INTO IT!!!!”

rule 1 to successfully faking a Justice track and then telling the truth after people are into it: MAKE FUCKING SURE I’m “totally into it”.

What I heard when listening to this track were unimpressive muted/muffled synths, samples from other justice tracks, and ‘church organ sounds’.

Let it be known, this track was in no way a BAD track, I’m just tired of people trying to be deceptive. Had this been a regular email trying to promote someone, I might have given it a better chance.

Rule 2: let’s leave sarah from colette out of it? what did she ever do to you? why would you want to eff up her name by associating it with yourselves??? why would she of all people leak a WRONG-FAKE justice track??

Rule 3: lie better.

St. Andrew is no joke. You’ve all heard his winning remix of Yelle’s ‘Ce Jeu’. I would have been far more stoked on the track had it been called “st. andrew’s new track” from the start.

Yelle - Ce Jeu (st. andrew remix)

This is not a post about St. Andrew. or is it?

keep sending me fakes. because i love them.

Did you hear about the new “Bangalter” track on Valentines Day? Some guy calling himself “TB” posted a link for a track called ‘Love’ on loads of blog comments. Naturally, everyone went totally batshit for it, until it emerged a few days later that it was a fake.

    Fail.

Sorry about all this. I found out about this after these emails had been sent. One of my “friends” back home in, Iowa, no less, had a little too much time on his hands and proceeded to try build some hype off of some shit track I made as an experiment. Your blog is legit! I’ll send you some real songs soon!

    St Andrew not Standrew

    name change is inevitable.
