UPDATE: thanks Jason for calling me out on the broken links, they’re fixed.

Ok, so I know, vacation means no computers, no work blah blah. Well, fuck vacation.

I got a message earlier this morning and boy was I excited. I’ve been in contact with the Buffet Libre guys for about a year now and they’ve been putting out awesome mixtapes, collaborations, parties, nonstop. I first heard about their latest project about 4 or 5 months ago. At that time the Rewind Project was merely in the planning stages with no actual evidence of existence… but now it’s all coming together.

July 15 marks the release of their first part of two in a series called “REWIND”. It’s an 80’s music cover project put on by Buffet Libre who enlisted the help of the blog world’s favorite electronic producers to re-make their favorite 80’s tunes.

Part one includes covers and remixes by: Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Dragonette, Moulinex, Xinobi,Overthrill, Cryptonites, Frankmusik, Sidechains, RAC feat Karl Kling, !Trash Yourself, South Central, Culture Prophet, Vitaminsforyou, Lismore, The Cloud Room, Mr Miyagi, Purple Crush, Levy, Electric Soft Parade, The Paper Scissors, Pomomofo, Saint Bernadette, Hello Tokyo, Cloetta Paris, Friday Bridge, ER2, Mark Mallman, Lucknow Pact, The Social Services, Band In A Box, We Are Soldiers We Have Guns, The Amplid, Oh Snap!, Fil Ok, Per QX, 3 is A Crowd, Mono4, Malk, Emotiquon, Julian Nation, Heartache, Hidden Cat, The Missiles, Database, CSK OK, Joe And Will Ask?, Cannonball Jane, The Fatels, Ruby Isle, PYT, Louis La Roche, TempestDisco, GlitchBitch, Keenhouse, Royal Rumble, Daroc, Adventure Kid.

Will you just look at that INSANE AS FUCK list of artists? This is like, a compilation of TUFTSMANIA BFFs. Also remember, this is just part 1.

I’m not going to link every single artist right now, after all, I’m on vacation. The Goog is your best friend.

To whet your appetite for the impending 80’s explosion, here’s a track from part 1. (believe me, both parts 1 and 2 are going to make you shit your shit)

Roger Troutman - Do It Roger (XINOBI Remix)

Part 1, July 15
Part 2, Sept 1

Don’t sleep!

Keep an eye on this spot for the official Buffet Libre Promo Minimix as well.

Apple mail puts a handy little play button in the mail window and I can listen directly there. This just makes my workflow that much quicker and a hell of a lot simpler.

I’d only heard of Intergalactic Bastard in passing, so getting a sample of his work in my mailbox was a nice surprise.

I’ve been loving this glitchy/stop/start sound lately –it’s kind of a sound The Videoband (no parisienne rmx, no exclamation) uses very well.

have a listen, then peep the myspace for other solid listening material. (very solid)

Aside from the awesome original productions (which hypem is overflowing with), Danger also dips his skinny fingers in the remix production game. I recently came across this track which made the A/C in my house explode with random, PBR-wielding dancing hipsters crawling out of the vents.

I can guarantee that you’ll hear this coming from my and everyone else’s car/headphones/house/parties ….starting last month.

NOTICE: there is a floating creature in the lower left. correct. <del datetime="2008-06-23T08:01:48+00:00">I am a huge fan of this ‘internet balloon race’ …. you could win shit… or something.</del> i don’t really know. anyway, i kind of like the cute animal. it will be here for a few days… or weeks… something.

I had to put this up to exemplify the fact that a music video can be ANYTHING. All that hinges on the success of said music video is the quality of the song. Subpar videos that are saved by awesome music, if you will.

take note: the same cannot be said about a shitty song combined with an awesome video.
disclaimer: I love Ladyhawke.

You may have heard an extremely catchy track featuring the voice of a female in my last mixtape. Modular Chris sent this tonight and I just had to smile about it. Ladyhawke’s ‘Paris is Burning’ is a highly solid track on its own merit. The same cannot be said about the music video featuring our favorite lady walking through various stages of events….

1. out the back door of a club, in an alley
2. battling drunk hobo in said alley
3. through a pillow fight
4. through a welding shop
5. finally ending up at prom with confetti

This just does nothing for me…. HOWEVER. It did EVERYTHING for me because the song is so good.

Think what you will, but it is my new mission to make shitty music videos over the best tracks I come across, and the magic of the sounds will prevail.

update: jason has informed me that he told Pip that her first cut of the video sucked. Upon hearing this, she promptly re-uploaded a new video. So this is actually version two. do any of you creepy e-stalking ladyhawke lovers have a saved flv? …. i mean, i’m sure it’s out there…. it’s not like i saved the rough cut of D.A.N.C.E. or anything…..

image: tuftsmania for MoustacheMe

I have a separate email for the myspace account, it’s ‘discojockeys [at] tuftsmania [dot] com’ and I thought I might just check it for fun. (prior to this, I didn’t even think of forwarding it to my main address, chris@tuftsmania.com) –speaking of social networking.. I’ve been stepping my game up! If you haven’t added me on facebook, twitter, myspace….. you’re missing out on some sweet memes.

Anyway, I found some awesome gems in there. Another mass CC message which I promptly replied to. This time it was a ‘what are you eating right now’ meme. The music blogging community has some definitely stellar taste in food. Especially MAD DECENT (not sure which blogger), rocking it downtown chinatown style with the vietnamese classic, “Banh Mi“. Word up to mad decent.

The original promo email that had us all on the same list was of an artist I’d never heard of. ChicandtheTramp rocks it daily over in Switzerland and I’m impressed. The heavy banger………STILL BURNS IN MY HEART…. or maybe it’s the Pink’s Chili Dogs.

The Police - Roxanne (ChicandtheTramp Remix)

Also I recently got my hands on the recent bootleg production of The Beach Boys - Locals Only. It was put together by the Black Lights and features remixes from Johnatron, bulimiatron, black lights, thavius (what’s up fellow CCer), ricky dollars, futuristic prince, and subtitle (what’s his myspace?).

Going through this album, most of the remixes are somewhat more abstract with core beats other than the standard 4/4… and that is awesome, but this is what immediately caught my attention. Definite crowd pleaser… so accessible.

The Beach Boys - Surfer Girl (johnatron remix)
[See post to listen to audio]

If you’re interested, download it for FREE at the Black Lights Blog, leave a comment and show them some love for their hard work.

This is a similar project to what Buffet Libre is doing with their ’80’s rewind project’ and I would love to see more of this kind of stuff in the future.

Lemme know what you think. If any links are dead… lemme know. The heat in LA is warping my mind.

It has a tracklist that is pretty much all 5-stars in my itunes, so you should check it out.

PS: what’s the deal with hotlinking files? Obviously it’s an easy way to link to a file/mp3/whatever, but it totally kills me these days. I’m not making any money from this website, and when another site (sometimes even sponsored, to remain nameless) hotlinks to the files hosted on this site, I over-run my bandwidth allotment. I have TONS of bandwidth and it is usually pretty hard to do, but once it’s linked outside on other bigger websites, game over. There really aren’t any excuses with the multitudes of free online file hosting (zshare, megaupload, yousendit.)

I could care less about ‘being the first’ to break news on a track,
I could care less about getting credit for ‘being the source’ of a track,
and I could care less about getting a huge reader base.

Getting quality visitors works well enough by word of mouth.

So, other leechy music blogs, let’s show some proper netiquette…

…AND SAVE ME THE BANDWIDTH OVER-USAGE MONEY!

I have more than 1 reason to be thankful for these guys right now. Pizza, double cheeseburgers, spaghetti, delicious… all you can eat in <font size="4"Buffet Libre.

1.
For the past year or so, these guys from Spain have been putting out some of the most tasteful mixtapes I’ve laid ears on (aka the Verbena series). It’s less of the ‘computer mixing trickery’ and more of just straight pure awesome track selection. The mixing is smooth, to the point, and seamless. No tacky trickery here to make up for the mindless process of building your tracklist around what ‘the blogs you follow on hypem‘ post weekly.

2.
Today after my hellish first block of finals, I was looking for some relief and Marc from Buffet Libre was chillin in my mailbox to the rescue. I may not have ever mentioned here, but for the past months, a song has been haunting my memory. Ever since the day I tried to remember the title of it to play at a party. It would NOT come to me. From then on, a day hasn’t passed without me hearing the intro/vocals/rhythm of that mystery song.

That went on for about 3 months………and finally ended today. All thanks to…

If any of you guys are in Barcelona, Mardrid or Outer Space, make sure you check these spots out.

June 21 - Buffetlibre Dj’s + Kavisky @ Low Club (Madrid)

OH, and that one track that was stuck in my head FOREVER was from both paris natives–

I can’t believe I forgot the artist/title of this track. It’s even 4 starred in my library. I’ve even blogged about The Shoes before. Hmm funny, that was right around finals time as well. anyways. time to study more.

Watch out twitter, your growing pains will be overtaken by the almighty CC list!

Well, for all those of you who are about to embark on a week of finals that may or may not kill you, here are some compressed audio files that will keep you alive.

After not hearing from Neon Coyote for a while, MOCIAS John hits me back with an amazing update. They’ve added a new player to the pack, Chico Love, and he’s fitting in quite nicely. He’s also a fan of stuffing an insane amount of tracks into a ~20 minute timeframe, so be ready for some nice A.D.D. induced mixing. I’m so down. Track list to die for. makin me bounce as we speaaaaak.

Le Castle Vania is no stranger in the blog scene. I think he has an LA and ATL identity crisis. Maybe the letters are confusing to him. Maybe he’s epileptic AND albino??? Anyway, his albino ass be mixing shit straight from the vampire demon lairs themselves. VERY ENJOYABLE, YES VERY.

Here he is remixing GRUM’s ‘Go Back’. It doesn’t really need any remixing, but the LCV remix makes it explode in the chorus. really. explosion. like huge. in a metal kind of way.

bb update: just got out of a final to find another 20 messages on my bb. The mailing list is going strong!

image: by AM @ tufts vs cits

The most astounding/interesting/perplexing thing happened this morning. Things went as usual. I woke up, brushed my teeth, fried an egg, burned the toast, then sat down for some quality 1 on 1 with apple mail. (yep, no shower, this is what future-scientists do)

Everything was going well and as usual: club promo, invites, mp3s, blah blah, label promoters being dicks, you know –the usual. ANYWAY…. I come to an email from Peter from the Outlaws. It’s got a mixtape, alright, sweet so I start downloading it. While that is going, I go to my next message.

I do a double take. someone pressed…..

REPLY TO ALL

and then… I saw it again… then again. The same title, but with more Re:’s attached and from different senders! By this point I could feel the excitement mounting in my happy little fingers. It had suddenly warped to 1982 and everyone reverted to using one of the earliest renditions of social networking known as ‘mailing lists’.

all those colored lines represent every time someone replied to all and re-quoted the whole message. there were at least 70 recipients on that list.

I think I just heard a little rip in the time/space continuum due to this.

The shirts are coming.

So thanks, Outlaws, for taking the incestuous blogosphere back to its roots. You know I’m not usually a fan of ‘mass track posts’, actually I don’t like that at all. But in the interest of time I’m gonna do it. Final examinations again.
ENOUGH OF THAT.

MANY Thanks to all the people who send me demos, advances, mixtapes, nudes, and especially all the big name labels who, as of late, have been flooding my inbox with complete bullshit (and arguably shitty incomplete SAMPLES of songs).

But most importantly, thanks to all the people who send me high-bitrate mp3s. I cannot stress how much this means to me. Things like this tell me that you VALUE you own work as an artist.

To me it says,

“Hey, my work is tops, I don’t want it heard on anything but the best quality it can be. 320kbs all over your chest.”

I am probably more apt to respect your shit if you demonstrate some level of respect for it as well.

Something I can’t understand is an email consisting of,

“hey dude blogger guy, I don’t really give a fuck but you’re on the mailing list I made by crawling hypemachine, here’s my 96kbs track, feel free to play it live and post a blog entry about it.”

10 min later,

“oh sorry bro, i forgot to attach/link the file”

By this point, not only am I bothered that there was a message that failed to deliver with music, I was totally let down by the SHITness of the finally delivered track. Failure to deliver is such a bitch.

I will obviously not play a track that isn’t appealing to me, but I will sure as shit not play something that sounds like it was:
recorded off a ford fiesta fm radio into a lawyer’s spit-encrusted-dictaphone,
re-recorded onto your macbook through the built in microphone,
maxed out the input level because it wasn’t loud enough,
and finally re-compressed.

There isn’t enough time in a day.

hang in there, I’ve got a few weeks to go.

don’t have time to say much more… so listen.

It’s late and I, just as the rest of the blog kingdom musicarius and genus Bloggerazoa, are all just listening to the latest sample track to come out of the Modular spam mailing list.

I am still on the fence about the Van She Tech remix of Ladyhawke’s BOTV (Fred Falke’s version still kills it).

But this next track can do no wrong. Taking ‘big gay circle jerk‘ to the next NEXT level, Van She Tech remixes Van She.

So that’s like, not even circle jerking, that’s like if a person were to be born with male and female sexual reproductive systems –self inseminating his/her own sperm and fertilizing his/her own egg.

NEXT LEVEL SHIT!!!!!!!!!!! BIG SELF-SEX HERMAPHRODITE SELF-JERK PRODUCING FETUS!

alright i’m over it. it’s late. i’m waking everyone up. this is really loud right now.

you.

make loud.

me.

make sleep.

the chorus makes me want to self-sex.

oh. AND PROPS TO VAN SHE TECH FOR USING A NEW SYNTH! FUCK YEAAAAAAAA (not that i was getting tired of the old one they used for 2 years straight or anything)

Maybe if we all scream loud enough, Sven of The Videoband will finally leak/release/materialize/shit out the final mix of La Parisienne. (please check it on myspace if you haven’t)

In the meantime, he’s been teasing me with a number of other remixes which I’ve liked enough to write about.

The teasing, hasn’t stopped, but thankfully everything they send my way is gold!

Here are 2 new remixes.

First up is Sam Sparro’s synthy funk track, Black Gold. If you’ve never heard of the guy, peep his myspace and check ’21st Century Life’. I don’t know much about him, but from his myspace, he kind of looks like a douche. It says he’s on a ‘major label’. Maybe his PR team should hire a new ‘myspace-friend-adder-intern’ and fire this guy who’s making his image really douchey.

Anyway, The Videoband has a knack. That is, they choose tracks with potentially life threatening vocals, slice, repeat, distort, and process them into a beast that has new life and probably way more appeal to you and me. Black Gold is one of these instances. I don’t recommend the original track in the LEAST, but if you do accidentally listen to it with your pitchfork-loving friends, you’ll realize that The Videoband knows what’s up in the ‘vocal-lyrical-fucking-shit-up’ department.

Sam Sparro - Black Gold (the videoband vocal fix remix)
[See post to listen to audio]

Secondly, David Guetta needs no introduction. The Videoband shows us their take on Guetta’s ‘Delirious’. While this tracks vocals aren’t painful to listen to, The Videoband works their vocal remixing magic on this track and turns the vocals into instruments rather than stupid self-loathing words.

Voices as instruments? Less words, more sounds. Less people sounding stupid, more music sounding better?

David Guetta - Delirious (The Videoband Remix 2)
[See post to listen to audio]

PS: keep screaming for The Videoband to drop the Parisienne track. When they do, you’ll see it here.

double trouble tonight.

remember Neon Coyote? Yeah, they’re kind of a big deal. Ever since their explosion onto the scene, they’ve had a steady uprising in popularity. If you looked at a chart of their success, it would look like the exact opposite of what a 12 month-current chart of the United States economy looks like.

So anyways, they’ve been like touring the world and shit. And playing huge 1000 people raves and shit. And pouring Cristal all over hipster bitches chests. They also have been enjoying a nice and relaxing time on their 42 million dollar yacht, reaping the benefits of being TTYC members.

Obviously tickets to their shows sell out within minutes and if you’re reading this, you’re either being unsociable at their party on your blackberry or you’re at home, being unsociable on your computer.

If you’re the latter, I have an underground bootleg recording of one of their shows. I can’t divulge much of the detail that went into procuring this mastermix, but it involved hacking, time travel, and 2 fatalities.

—
LA GREVE GENERALE!!!!!!!!!!

in the midst of their busy schedules, John from LAGREVE was able to throw this live set at me… and their style is getting excellently STEEZY. It cannot be contained. The intro sets you up for something fierce, and the rest of the set definitely lives up to it.
