Say hello to my old friend, Bloody Beetroots. I’ve been like, jizzing myself about them for the past… oh, year.
The Bloody Beetroots can throw their ’signature’ bass drum + snare + plucking synths + distorted/reversed vocals + stutter tracks on ANYTHING and make it sound gold, but is there anything beyond these sounds with the masked (all day long) italian producers?
Don’t get me wrong on this one, I’m not complaining, but let’s hear what you can do using something outside the box of beetroots.
Here’s a fairly recent remix of Secret Handshake. This band is part of a very…. interesting movement… which I like to call the emo-fag-failure-vocoded-electro movement popularized by the likes of Muscles et al. (who’s not gay –australia factor/remixed by gods –circle jerk effect).
There are a number of other land locked-united states ‘outfits’ not unlike these who have a cult following of teenage guys. I get depressed looking at their myspaces so I’ll leave the search up to you.
Vocoding is pretty gay, (used every day by akon and t-pain - very important that you click). Let’s leave the vocoding to Cher.
Sorry, derail, back to the track. Again, classic BBs sound (that’s short for Bloody Beetroots, yeah, acronyms.) The intro starts this track so well and builds it up into a string quartet, electronic blow-up.
touche my italian friends, touche.

BONUS!!!! we’ve got the EP version of ‘Butter’ due out on the EP from dim mak soon! Assuming most of you have heard the draft version of Butter, and this is a prime example of ‘outside of beetroots box’ territory. Still has some vintage flavor but a slew of new and welcome sounds.
Watch for stateside releases of Bloody Beetroots LP/EP from your most well known ambiguously feminine asian w/ facial hair label mama….Steve Aoki, Dim Mak -reaping the benefits of music blogville since, forever and signing the bands. amen.
milan, so hot right now. (updated)

Pretty much all over Italy actually. Bloody Beetroots, Congorock, Crookers!
Another name you must educate yourself on is Pulling Teeth from Milan. They just released a track called New Era, and I haven’t been able to stop repeating it.
They said it’s completely original, using their own voices as the vocal track (where’s the girl at??). This track could be an anthem.
I was expecting an insane fidget/bass explosion from my speakers after the piano fade out, but the track just went silent. I guess a good place for me to drop some other gigantic sound. Pulling Teeth, extended mix?
hoooollly shit…. alright, here it comes. Look out for the insanity arpeggiation that leads out from about the 1/2 way mark. They remind me of somebody’s arpeggios… can’t put my finger on it. (teenage bad girl? RIP)
Giulio from Pulling Teeth updated me with some interesting info on the track, specifically those interesting vocals:
the real story, is that we went to this voiceover site, cos we wanted a female macy gray like vocals, and we heard this girl voiceover and we both felt in love with it.
she was not a proper singer but i did the vocal line that she followed then she went to his boyfriend studio to record the line and sent it over.
mail order vocals, hot in ‘08!

Fresh from my old, dusty and neglected inbox comes new remixes by ….drumroll……………………..TUFTSMANIA’S FAVORITE!!! The Bloody Beetroots. I was sent these a couple weeks ago and just couldn’t get around to posting about them. This Beetroots track is a remix of UK’s Captain Phoenix - Pistols and Hearts on Kind Canyon Records. I had been a fan of Captain Phoenix for a bit now, so I was excited to hear that my favorite italians had a chance to work their magic on the track.
The original track is a classy joint, but the Beetroots touch is nothing near it. Completely grimy, scratchy, raw, and trademark Bloody Beetroots. Where the original track would have failed in a club, this remix now makes it a winner. The track retains enough of the original lyrics and melody to be discernible as a Captain Phoenix track, but now it’s a completely evolved beast.
I urge you to listen and blast it in your cubicle, out your window, during your set, into your ears, dance with grandpa.
