tuftsmania on failed viral marketing attempts

March 26, 2008 | Filed Under music | 5 Comments

While my friend Andrew is blogging about Judd Apatow’s newest viral marketing scheme, which is quite successful to an extent, I’m going to blog about a recent viral e-mail marketing attempt…

Which in my opinion, failed miserably.

This is how it starts out:

Initially I’m thinking, sweet, a new leak. Then I proceed to click the link to listen. Whatever smile I had on my face was reduced to a neutral stare. “this can in no fucking way be Justice” is what tell myself. So I put that message aside for a few days.

This morning I woke up to my blackberry blinking red. I got another email from the same person who ‘forwarded’ me that message from sarah colette (more on that later).

The truth comes out. Someone came up with the bright idea…

“HEY, LET’S BUILD SOME HYPE FOR YOU BY TRYING TO PASS OURSELVES OFF AS JUSTICE….AND THEN TELL EVERYONE THE TRUTH AFTER THEY ARE TOTALLY INTO IT!!!!”

rule 1 to successfully faking a Justice track and then telling the truth after people are into it: MAKE FUCKING SURE I’m “totally into it”.

What I heard when listening to this track were unimpressive muted/muffled synths, samples from other justice tracks, and ‘church organ sounds’.

Let it be known, this track was in no way a BAD track, I’m just tired of people trying to be deceptive. Had this been a regular email trying to promote someone, I might have given it a better chance.

Rule 2: let’s leave sarah from colette out of it? what did she ever do to you? why would you want to eff up her name by associating it with yourselves??? why would she of all people leak a WRONG-FAKE justice track??

Rule 3: lie better.

St. Andrew is no joke. You’ve all heard his winning remix of Yelle’s ‘Ce Jeu’. I would have been far more stoked on the track had it been called “st. andrew’s new track” from the start.

This is not a post about St. Andrew. or is it?

keep sending me fakes. because i love them.

the videoband: the saga continues

cut that bitch up

I mentioned THE VIDEOBAND! about a week ago. I hope I gave it ample time to sink into your marrow filled bones.

The way these guys cut/slice/rip up vocals, rhythms, and re-dub tracks is reallllly appealing to me. It’s probably just the fact that they lay a dirty, synthy, stuttery guitar sound over all their tracks. (read: vst, bag raiders, knightlife etc etc) –but I couldn’t care less.

–And I’m not complaining.

Dear Videoband,

GIVE US MORE. <3

I’m going to quote/paraphrase/borrow what CRLZZZ from hipsterrunoff said about Yelle - Ce Jeu: (ok, full quote)

“Ce Jeu” Remixes are the new “Drugs In My Body” Remixes are the new “D.A.N.C.E” Remixes are the new ______ remixes, etc etc.

INAHALE THIS MY FRIENDS!!
Yelle - Ce Jeu (slaughtered by the videoband rmx)

Up next, Rihanna - Umbrella. Now, from the day this original track was conceived I avoided it like the plague due to my hatred of everything that leaves this girl’s whorish mouth. I was surprised by a remix I heard of it on my boy CITS‘ website (rest in pieces, cits the music blog), and I told myself that remixes of Rihanna could be acceptable.

PRIME EXAMPLE: Videoband thankfully throws some more layers over her god-awful voice. Paper bagging it so to speak.

Thanks, Videoband, for making abominations like these more palatable, and making hipster children believe Rihanna could be cool.
